Izumo Airport opened in the 1960s (officially launched in 1966) and today operates from a single compact passenger terminal as the main air gateway for Shimane Prefecture. Known locally as Izumo Enmusubi Airport since a 2019 rebrand, it’s an important regional hub for visitors to Izumo Taisha and the San’in coast, with frequent domestic links to Tokyo and Osaka and seasonal services elsewhere. Ground access is simple—regular shuttle buses and taxis connect the airport with Izumo and Matsue stations in under an hour—making it ideal for day trips. Flights are generally reasonably priced for domestic travel, and carriers include All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines rather than a dedicated hub airline.
