Kitakyushu Airport (KKJ) opened in 2006 on an artificial island and operates from a single compact terminal, acting as the primary air gateway to northern Kyushu. Although modest in size compared with Fukuoka, KKJ is important for domestic links and occasional international charters, with regular services by ANA, JAL and a number of regional and low-cost carriers. A 2-km bridge connects the airport to the mainland, and frequent shuttle buses link to Kokura Station and highway routes to Fukuoka and nearby cities, making it easily accessible for business and leisure travelers. Fares tend to be competitive for domestic trips, with budget options available.
