Istanbul New Airport (IST), officially opened in 2018 and located in Arnavutköy on Istanbul’s European side, is a vast international gateway with one main terminal (Phase 1) and plans for additional terminals to become a mega‑hub. As the primary hub for Turkish Airlines and its regional arm AnadoluJet, IST handles millions of transfer passengers and connects Europe, Asia and beyond. Roughly 40 km from central Istanbul, it’s served by the M11 metro line, Havaist and municipal airport buses, taxis and highways for straightforward access. Airport services can be pricier than local travel, but plentiful shuttle and low‑cost flight options keep it relatively affordable for many travelers.
Cash on arrival is easy: expect around a dozen currency exchange counters and 50+ bank ATMs spread across International Arrivals, Departures, and the metro level. For the best value, take a small withdrawal from a bank-owned ATM and do any bigger exchanges in the city, where rates are noticeably better and queues shorter.
Think big: Istanbul Airport’s duty‑free village mixes luxury labels, beauty halls and a Turkish “Old Bazaar,” open 24/7 in departures and arrivals. Expect better‑than‑city prices on perfumes, spirits and tobacco, plus last‑minute shops by most international gates.
Come hungry—this giant hub serves up 100+ eateries, from quick simit and specialty coffee to proper Turkish grills. Most options cluster in the central international hall and domestic departures, with coffee around 90–160 TL and meals 350–700 TL, typically 20–40% pricier than downtown.
Need a bandage, a quick check-up, or last-minute meds? Istanbul Airport keeps 24/7 medical points and well-stocked pharmacies both land- and airside, so help is always close.
Store your bags 24/7 on the Arrivals level at Istanbul Airport’s secure left‑luggage counters, convenient to both the International and Domestic halls. Carry‑ons, suitcases, and oversize gear are accepted; show ID, clear an X‑ray, and expect day rates roughly 250–700 TRY (≈ €7–20) depending on size.
Slip into a quiet nap zone or one of five major lounges at Istanbul’s new airport—open 24/7 with fast Wi‑Fi, plenty of plugs, hot showers, and generous Turkish buffets—to recharge between flights.
