Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), opened in 1916, is the Netherlands’ primary international gateway with a single, sprawling terminal building divided into multiple departure halls and concourses, handling tens of millions of passengers a year. As one of Europe’s busiest hubs, Schiphol is home to KLM and KLM Cityhopper and serves as a base for several carriers including Transavia Netherlands, making it a key connection point for intercontinental and European flights. The airport sits just southwest of Amsterdam with a major train station directly beneath the terminal offering 15–20 minute services to Amsterdam Central and strong bus, taxi and highway links; parking and on-site services tend to push costs into the mid-to-expensive range compared with budget airports, though good public-transport access keeps transfers affordable for many travelers.
