Charleroi Brussels South Airport opened as an airfield in 1919 and grew into Belgium’s second-largest passenger airport, with a single main terminal serving a mix of short- and medium-haul routes. Located about 50 km south of Brussels in Wallonia, CRL is an important low-cost gateway for travelers headed to Brussels, Charleroi and Namur, with regular coach shuttles to Brussels Midi, local buses to Charleroi-Sud rail hub and straightforward road links via the E19/N5. Favored by budget flyers, the airport is generally affordable compared with Brussels’ main airport, and acts as a major base for Ryanair alongside a handful of seasonal low-cost operators.
