Osaka’s Itami Airport first opened in 1939 and today operates as a compact domestic gateway with two passenger terminals, handling the bulk of regional flights to Tokyo, Sapporo and other Japanese cities. Strategically important for Greater Osaka, Itami is a mid-size, busy airport with strict night curfews and slot limits that shape its schedule. Travelers reach the airport via the Osaka Monorail (Hotarugaike), plus frequent airport buses and shuttles linking downtown Osaka, Umeda, Namba, Kyoto and Kobe. Itami is commonly used by ANA and JAL for domestic routes; fares tend to be mid-priced—often a bit higher than nearby Kansai International where many low-cost carriers operate.
