Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) opened in 1927 and was renamed Midway in 1949; today it operates a single terminal with three concourses and serves as Chicago’s compact, second-busiest airport on the Southwest Side. Midway is an important short-haul and domestic gateway—especially for budget travelers—thanks to a major Southwest Airlines base that keeps fares competitive. Located about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of downtown Chicago in the Archer Heights/Brighton Park area, the airport offers direct CTA Orange Line service to the Loop, multiple bus routes, taxis and easy access from I‑55 and local shuttles, making it convenient and generally affordable for travelers.
