Opened in 1936 and later renamed for Israel’s first prime minister, Ben Gurion International is Israel’s largest and busiest gateway, featuring two main passenger terminals (the modern Terminal 3 and a smaller Terminal 1) and extensive security infrastructure. Located in Lod about 15 km southeast of central Tel Aviv, the airport offers a direct rail link, frequent buses, taxis and highway access that also make Jerusalem and the Dead Sea reachable for day trips. Ben Gurion is pivotal for international travel and serves as the primary hub for El Al (with Arkia and Israir operating bases), and while on-site shops and parking can be pricey, low-cost carriers and competitive fares keep overall travel costs reasonable.
