Sun Moon Lake Airport (IATA: SMT) is a small regional gateway opened in 2006 that serves visitors to Taiwan’s famous lake area and central highlands; the compact facility operates from a single terminal and one runway, making it easy to navigate for budget-minded travelers. Though modest in size, SMT is an important access point for leisure traffic, with regular shuttle buses and local buses linking the terminal to Sun Moon Lake, Taichung city and the nearby High Speed Rail station, plus taxis and car hire for flexible transfers. The airport is generally considered affordable compared with major international hubs, and it is not a base for large airlines—routes are mainly operated by regional carriers and seasonal charter flights.
