Founded in 1939, US Airways evolved from regional beginnings into a major U.S. legacy carrier with hubs in Philadelphia, Charlotte and Phoenix and a broad domestic and transatlantic route network. Advantages included wide network coverage, competitive fares relative to other full‑service carriers, and strong frequent‑flyer connectivity; disadvantages were inconsistent onboard service and ground handling, variable punctuality, and an aging mixed fleet that sometimes affected comfort. Not a low‑cost carrier, it carried a 3‑star Skytrax rating and was merged into American Airlines (announced 2013, brand retired 2015).
