Founded in 1977, Great Lakes Airlines was a U.S. regional commuter carrier focused on short-haul routes and Essential Air Service links to small communities. Advantages included connectivity to thin markets and frequent shuttle-style schedules; disadvantages encompassed a limited route network, small and aging turboprop fleet (notably Beechcraft 1900 aircraft), basic onboard service, mixed punctuality and reliability, and dependence on subsidy contracts. It operated as a regional/commuter airline rather than a low-cost or premium carrier, held no Skytrax rating, and suspended scheduled operations in 2018.
