Venice Marco Polo Airport opened in 1960 and operates from a single main passenger terminal with several piers, serving as the primary international gateway to the Veneto region and the Venetian Lagoon. Compact but busy, it handles millions of travelers a year and connects directly to Venice by Alilaguna water buses, frequent ATVO/ACTV shuttles to Piazzale Roma and Mestre train station, taxis and car hire—about 8–12 km from the historic center. Popular with budget flyers, it’s generally affordable thanks to bases for low-cost carriers like Ryanair and easyJet, while also hosting ITA Airways and major European airlines; parking and some services can be pricier on-site.
