Timaru Airport (TIU), established in the 1930s, is a compact regional aerodrome serving Timaru and the wider South Canterbury area with a single small terminal and basic passenger facilities. As one of the South Island’s quieter airports, it handles general aviation, charter flights and occasional scheduled regional services rather than major carrier hubs, and is home to the Timaru Aero Club and a handful of local charter operators. The airport lies a short 10-minute drive from Timaru city centre with easy road links to State Highway 1; public transport is limited so taxis, shuttles and rental cars are the most common connections. Airport fees and parking are modest, though airfares on limited regional routes can be pricier than at larger hubs.
