Christchurch International Airport

Christchurch International Airport (CHC), located at Harewood just northwest of central Christchurch, first opened in the 1940s and today operates from one main terminal with distinct international and domestic precincts. As the South Island’s principal gateway and one of New Zealand’s busiest airports, CHC handles a mix of long-haul, trans-Tasman and domestic services. It’s about 12 km (roughly a 20-minute drive) from the city centre and is well connected by regular public buses, airport shuttle coaches, taxis and car rental services. Travelers generally find fares and on-site prices more reasonable than larger global hubs, and the airport acts as a major base for Air New Zealand and a base for low-cost carriers such as Jetstar while welcoming several regional airlines.
