Opened in 1935, Sion Airport is a compact regional gateway in the heart of the Swiss Alps serving the Rhône Valley and popular ski resorts such as Verbier and Crans-Montana. The airport has a single small passenger terminal and handles a mix of seasonal scheduled and charter flights, general aviation and military operations as a Swiss Air Force base. Located just a few kilometres from Sion city centre, it’s easily reached by road, local bus connections, taxis and car rental for onward trips into the mountains. Prices tend to be moderate to high compared with major low-cost hubs, though winter charters can offer good deals; Sion is not a major airline hub but regularly hosts seasonal carriers and private operators.
