Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF), originally opened in 1941, is a small, single‑terminal airport serving northern New Mexico and the state capital. Quiet and compact compared with nearby Albuquerque, SAF handles regional scheduled flights and general aviation, making it a convenient entry point for visitors to Santa Fe’s historic Plaza and nearby ski areas. Located roughly 12 miles (about 20 km) south of downtown, the airport has limited public-transport options—shuttles, taxis and rental cars are the easiest ways into the city, with commuter rail services reachable via connecting shuttles. SAF is not a major hub; it’s primarily served by regional affiliates such as American Eagle and United Express. With fewer carriers and limited competition, fares can be pricier than flying into larger hubs, but the time saved and convenience often justify the cost for many travelers.
