Lanseria International Airport opened in 1974 and today operates from a single, compact terminal with separate domestic and modest international facilities, serving as Johannesburg’s convenient secondary airport. Smaller and less hectic than OR Tambo, Lanseria is important for regional and low-cost travel, offering quick check-ins and shorter queues. Located about 28 km northwest of Johannesburg CBD, it’s accessible via the R512/N14 corridors with regular shuttle services to Sandton and Fourways, taxis, car hire and long-term parking; there’s limited rail access. Often more affordable for budget travelers, Lanseria functions as a base for several South African low-cost carriers such as FlySafair and CemAir and handles focused regional routes for operators like Airlink.
