Kilimanjaro International Airport opened in 1971 and today operates a single main passenger terminal handling both domestic and international flights, plus cargo facilities; it’s the primary gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro, Arusha and northern safari parks and ranks as a medium-sized, strategically important Tanzanian airport. Located roughly 40–50 km from both Arusha and Moshi, it’s well connected by shuttle buses, scheduled coaches to lodges, taxis and car hire for onward transfers to safari camps. Regional carriers such as Precision Air and Air Tanzania maintain a strong presence, while seasonal European and Middle Eastern services (for example KLM and Turkish Airlines) add international links. On-site prices can be higher than local towns, but overall the airport is generally affordable compared with major global hubs, with competitively priced regional flights ideal for budget-minded travelers seeking safari and mountain access.
