Ilopango Airport, opened in the 1920s and named for the nearby Lake Ilopango, is a compact regional airport just east of downtown San Salvador that operates from a single small passenger terminal and a military apron. Once the country’s main field, it’s now important for short-haul links across Central America, charter flights and general aviation, with several regional and charter operators and the Salvadoran Air Force based there. About 8–10 km from the city center, it’s reachable by CA-1 highway, local buses, shuttles and taxis, and is generally seen as an affordable option for budget-minded travelers compared with the larger international airport.
