Harrisburg International Airport, opened in the late 1960s after conversion from the former Olmsted Air Force Base, is a compact regional airport serving Pennsylvania’s state capital and central PA. Operating from a single terminal with a couple of concourses, it handles commercial, cargo and general aviation traffic and offers a quicker, less crowded alternative to larger Northeast hubs. Located about 8–10 miles south of downtown Harrisburg near Middletown, it’s easily reached via I‑283 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike with shuttle, rental car and bus links. Fares are often more affordable than big-city airports, and the field hosts a mix of legacy and low-cost carriers rather than serving as a major airline hub.
