El Salvador International Airport opened in 1980 and, renamed in 2014 as Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport, is the country’s main gateway with one primary passenger terminal (two concourses) handling most international and regional flights. Medium in size but strategically important for Central American connections, it acts as the primary hub for Avianca El Salvador (formerly TACA) and is served by major and low-cost carriers such as Copa, American, United, Volaris and Spirit. Located in San Luis Talpa about a 40–60 minute drive from San Salvador, the airport is well connected by highway shuttle buses, taxis and car rentals, and is generally regarded as an affordable entry point for travelers seeking competitive fares across the region.
