Wellington International Airport (WLG), opened at the Rongotai site in 1959, is the compact but busy gateway to New Zealand’s capital, featuring a single main terminal with separate domestic and international piers. As the country’s third-busiest airport, it’s an important hub for Air New Zealand and a base for budget carrier Jetstar, plus several regional operators serving the lower North and South Islands. Located about 6 km from Wellington CBD on a scenic, often-windy isthmus, the airport is well connected by frequent Metlink buses, airport shuttles, taxis and easy road links. Fares are usually competitive for domestic travel, with international routes mid-range.
