Wamena Airport

Wamena Airport, established in the mid-20th century (around the 1950s), is the primary air gateway to the Baliem Valley and the town of Wamena in Highland Papua. This compact regional field operates from a single terminal and mainly handles turboprops and short domestic hops, making it vital for connecting remote highland communities. The airport is a short drive from Wamena’s center and is reached by local taxis and minibuses; regular scheduled flights link Wamena with Jayapura, Timika and other Papuan towns. While not an international hub, it acts as an important regional base for carriers serving the highlands and is generally affordable on domestic routes, though fares to remote destinations can be higher than lowland domestic flights.
