Tindal (IATA: KTR), officially RAAF Base Tindal, was established in the early 1940s (around 1942) and today combines military facilities with one small civilian terminal serving the Katherine region and the Northern Territory’s Top End. It’s a compact but strategically important airfield acting as a regional link and alternate to Darwin, supporting fly-in fly-out workforces and tourists bound for Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. Located roughly 15–20 km southeast of Katherine and about 320 km from Darwin, the airport is reachable by shuttle, taxis, rental cars and regional coaches. Generally affordable for short domestic hops, Tindal is primarily a Royal Australian Air Force base and is served commercially by regional carriers such as Airnorth and various charter operators.
