Thessaloniki International Airport Makedonia first opened in 1930 and today operates from a single terminal handling domestic and international traffic as Greece’s second-busiest airport. Compact but busy, SKG is an important gateway to northern Greece and the Halkidiki beaches, about 15 km east of Thessaloniki’s city center with regular public buses, airport shuttles, taxis and car-rental options; a metro connection is planned. The airport is popular with budget travelers and generally offers affordable fares thanks to a strong presence of low-cost carriers; it also serves as a regional base for Aegean/Olympic’s domestic network and many Ryanair and Wizz Air routes.
