Svalbard Airport

Svalbard Airport (LYR), opened in 1975, is Longyearbyen’s compact but vital Arctic gateway with a single passenger terminal handling year‑round scheduled flights; it’s the main air link between Svalbard and mainland Norway and the northernmost airport with regular services. The airport is about 3 km from Longyearbyen and easily reached by taxi, hotel shuttles and local buses, with limited road connections beyond the settlement and seasonal boat alternatives for coastal trips. Not a major airline hub, LYR serves as a base for regional and charter operators (including Lufttransport) and sees scheduled services from SAS, Norwegian and Widerøe; fares tend to be higher than average due to remoteness, though local ground transport is reasonably priced.
