Sawyer International Airport opened for civilian use in the late 1990s on the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base and today operates from a single small passenger terminal as the primary commercial gateway to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The airport is modest in size but important for Marquette-area travel, with regular regional flights and seasonal routes. Ground access is easy via US-41 and nearby highways, with rental cars, shared shuttles, taxis and limited regional bus links providing a roughly 20–30 minute drive to downtown Marquette. Fares are often competitive on seasonal deals but can run mid-range due to limited competition; it is not a hub for major carriers, though regional affiliates of Delta, United and American and occasional low-cost seasonal airlines provide service.
