Pyongyang Sunan International Airport opened in 1955 and serves as North Korea’s primary international gateway, with roughly two terminals (domestic and international) handling a compact but important volume of traffic. Located in Sunan District about 20–25 km north of central Pyongyang, the airport is reachable by road and limited public transport, though most travelers use arranged buses, taxis or official transfers through tour operators. Smaller and more controlled than major regional hubs, Sunan is notable for being the base for national carrier Air Koryo and has seen modest upgrades in recent years. Due to limited airlines and flights, fares tend to be pricier than average for the region.
