Opened in 1983 to serve the booming resort region, Punta Cana International is a medium-to-large Caribbean gateway with two main passenger terminals handling millions of leisure travelers each year. As the Dominican Republic’s busiest resort airport, it’s the primary entry point for Bávaro, Punta Cana and nearby all-inclusive resorts; taxis, shuttle buses and plentiful car-rental options make the 10–20 minute transfer to most hotels simple, while regional buses and private transfers link to other cities. PUJ is generally affordable for vacationers thanks to strong charter and package competition, and while it isn’t a legacy-carrier hub it functions as a base for many tour operators and a key destination for carriers like Sunwing, WestJet, JetBlue, American and Delta.
