Mount Hagen Airport (HGU), commonly known as Kagamuga Airport, opened in the 1930s and operates from a single modest terminal as the primary gateway to Papua New Guinea’s Western Highlands. As one of the Highlands’ most important regional airports, it links Mount Hagen city with Port Moresby, Lae and other domestic destinations via regular services from PNG Air and Air Niugini, and smaller charter operators. The airport is about a short drive from Mount Hagen city centre with taxis and minibuses providing the main ground connections; road access can be bumpy in wet weather. Travelers will find fares generally moderate on scheduled routes, though charters and last-minute bookings can be costly.
