Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) opened as a small airfield in the late 1920s and today operates a single passenger terminal serving Colorado’s Western Slope; it’s a compact but busy regional gateway for Telluride, Black Canyon National Park and western ski areas. The airport is modest in size but important seasonally, handling mostly narrow-body jets and surge winter traffic. It’s about 5 miles from downtown Montrose with rental cars, local shuttles and private airport transfers linking to Telluride (roughly a 60–90 minute drive); public transit is limited. MTJ is generally affordable outside peak ski weeks, and carriers such as United, American, Delta, Frontier and Allegiant run regular or seasonal routes (the airport is not a major airline hub).
