Mobile Downtown Airport, also known locally as Bates Field and established in the 1940s, is a compact general aviation airport serving downtown Mobile and the Port of Mobile. With a single small terminal and a handful of hangars, it functions as an important reliever field for larger Mobile airports, supporting private flights, charters, helicopter operators and flight schools. Located just a few miles from the city center and popular waterfront attractions, it’s easily reached by car, taxi or local shuttle services, with limited public transit options. Costs are generally modest compared with major commercial airports, and while it isn’t a hub for major airlines, it serves as a base for regional charter firms and aviation businesses.
