Mashhad International Airport, opened in the 1960s and modernized several times since, is a major regional gateway to Iran’s northeast and the Imam Reza shrine; the airport operates two main passenger terminals plus separate cargo facilities and handles heavy seasonal pilgrimage traffic. Roughly 10–15 km from Mashhad’s city center, it’s well linked by airport buses, taxis and road connections with metro expansion improving access, making transfers straightforward for visitors and business travelers. Fares to Mashhad are generally affordable—especially on domestic routes—while on-site services can be pricier.
