Koh Samui Airport opened in 1989 and remains the island’s compact, tourism-focused gateway with a single terminal handling domestic and limited international flights; built and operated by Bangkok Airways, it serves as that airline’s regional hub. The airport is small but busy during high season, offering a short walk from plane to arrivals and quick baggage pickups — perfect for travelers headed to Chaweng, Bophut or Lamai. Ground connections include hotel transfers, taxis and shared minibuses (no rail), and ferries link neighboring islands from nearby piers. Because of private operating fees and limited competition, airfares tend to be pricier than mainland routes.
