Hat Yai International Airport opened in the mid-20th century (around the 1940s–1950s) and operates from a single passenger terminal, serving as the main aviation gateway to southern Thailand and a handy cross-border link to Malaysia. Compact but busy, the airport handles a mix of domestic and regional international flights and is especially important for shoppers and tourist traffic between Hat Yai, Songkhla province and nearby Malaysian cities. It’s about a 10–20 minute transfer to Hat Yai city center by taxi, airport shuttle or local songthaew, with rail and long-distance bus connections nearby. Generally affordable for travelers, Hat Yai is a base or focus city for regional carriers such as Nok Air and sees frequent services from Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air.
