Opened in 1992 and officially named for Franz Josef Strauss, Munich Airport is a large international gateway with two main terminals (plus a satellite concourse) serving as Germany’s second-busiest airport and a key European hub. Well connected about 28 km northeast of central Munich, the airport links to the city by S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 in roughly 35–45 minutes, long-distance coaches and motorways (A92), and regional rail and bus services to Bavaria and neighboring Austria. It’s a primary hub for Lufthansa and its regional affiliates, with significant operations by other carriers; on-site prices tend to be mid-to-high, but flight fares can be competitive.
