Cape Town International Airport, opened in 1954, is South Africa’s second-busiest airport and the main gateway to the Western Cape, featuring one main passenger terminal with distinct domestic and international sections and several piers. The airport is medium-large in size and important for both leisure and business travel, with regular services to Europe, Africa and domestic routes. It sits about 20 km from Cape Town city centre in Matroosfontein and is well connected by the N2 highway, the MyCiTi airport bus, airport shuttles, taxis and rental cars (no direct rail link). Prices can be mid-range but affordable options are common thanks to low-cost carriers; the airport acts as a base or focus city for operators such as Kulula, FlySafair and regional Airlink.
