W. H. Bramble Airport opened in 1969 as Montserrat’s compact, single‑terminal gateway and for decades was the island’s main regional airport before being incapacitated by the Soufrière Hills eruption in 1997. The small airport handled short inter‑island hops—primarily to Antigua and neighboring Leeward Islands—so travelers found fares typically affordable compared with long‑haul routes; it was served by regional carriers such as LIAT and other Caribbean inter‑island airlines rather than acting as a major hub. Located near Plymouth, Bramble offered quick access to the island’s south side and ferry links to other islands; its role has since been taken over by the newer Gerald’s/John A. Osborne Airport.
