Bangda Airport (IATA: BPX), also known as Qamdo Bamda Airport, opened in 1994 and operates from a single terminal high on the Tibetan Plateau. Famous as one of the world’s highest civilian airports, Bangda is a strategic regional gateway for Chamdo (Qamdo) and eastern Tibet with a very long runway built for high-altitude operations and scenic, challenging approaches. The airport is about 60 km from Chamdo city and is reached by mountain roads with taxis and limited shuttle services; public transport is basic and seasonal. Flights are generally mid-to-expensive due to remoteness, and you’ll find regular services from carriers such as Air China, Sichuan Airlines, China Eastern and Tibet Airlines rather than a major hub presence.
