Asmara International Airport, built during the Italian colonial era in the 1930s, is Eritrea’s modest but important gateway with a single small terminal serving international and regional traffic. Perched on the Eritrean highlands with a scenic, high-altitude approach, the airport is the primary access point for Asmara and connects to nearby cities by road—taxis and hotel shuttles are the main public options, while scheduled minibuses provide limited service. As a national base for Eritrean Airlines, it handles relatively low passenger volumes compared with larger hubs, which can make ticket prices higher due to limited competition, though ground costs in the city remain affordable.
