Al-Najaf International Airport opened in 2008 and operates from a single main passenger terminal, serving as a medium-sized regional gateway in southern Iraq primarily for religious tourism to the Imam Ali Shrine. The airport is about 10–15 km from Najaf city center with straightforward road links, taxi and shuttle services and seasonal bus connections that also make Karbala reachable for pilgrims. Generally considered affordable for regional flights, fares can rise during peak pilgrimage periods. Al-Najaf is an important destination and operational base for Iraqi carriers such as Iraqi Airways and Fly Baghdad, with additional seasonal services from regional airlines.
