Abu Dhabi International Airport, Abu Dhabi, Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), opened in 1982, is the capital’s main gateway and has grown into a modern regional hub with approximately three terminals — the original passenger terminal, a low-cost Terminal 2, and a recently expanded Midfield Terminal. Positioned about 30–40 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi, AUH offers convenient connections via taxis, ride‑hailing services, airport shuttles and regular bus links to the city and nearby Al Ain, making transfers straightforward. Known for a high standard of facilities, the airport serves as the primary hub for Etihad Airways and hosts bases for carriers like Wizz Air Abu Dhabi and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi; fares and on-site prices tend to be mid to slightly above-average compared with regional low-cost airports.
Need dirhams fast? Terminal A offers about a dozen exchange counters and 20+ ATMs across arrivals and departures; major currencies are covered, but airport rates run higher than downtown—use an ATM for a small withdrawal now and save bigger exchanges for the city.
Make time to wander Abu Dhabi Duty Free’s bright new halls in Terminal A—beauty, chocolates, spirits, and luxe labels are all in easy reach, with smaller shops in Terminal 2 and even in arrivals. Prices are typically lower than the city (especially for liquor and tobacco), and most counters run 24/7 for departing, connecting, and arriving travelers.
Craving a quick shawarma or a flat white? Terminal A lines up around 40 places to eat and drink across the landside plaza, the post‑security central atrium, and the gate piers, with coffee from AED 18–28 and meals from AED 35–100—typically 10–25% higher than in the city.
Round-the-clock clinics and well‑stocked pharmacies are easy to spot in Terminal A, near both Departures and Arrivals—handy for first aid, minor care, and last‑minute travel health essentials. First response is free; consultations, medications, and tests are paid.
Roam light between flights: Abu Dhabi International currently has no lockers, but early bag drop, hotel concierges and vetted city storage spots (around 30–45 AED per day) are easy, safe alternatives. Bring photo ID; standard suitcases and carry‑ons are fine, while oversize items may cost a little more.
Settle into Etihad’s First or Business Lounges, the 24/7 Pearl Lounge, or Sleep ’n Fly pods—all airside in Terminal A—with fast Wi‑Fi, showers, and plenty of charging. Prefer a free option? Quiet zones with reclining seats sit at the end of each pier for a quick nap between flights.
