Keflavik International Airport (KEF) opened as a military airfield in 1943 and today operates a single main passenger terminal that handles most of Iceland’s international traffic. As the country’s largest airport and primary international gateway, KEF connects Reykjavik and the whole island to Europe and North America, roughly 50 km from downtown Reykjavik with regular Flybus shuttles, taxis, car rentals and regional coaches on Route 41 (about 45–60 minutes). Known for efficient transatlantic connections, it’s a hub for Icelandair and a base for newcomers like PLAY. On-site dining and parking can be pricier than average, though flight deals are often affordable.
