George Bush Intercontinental Airport opened in 1969 and now operates five terminals, serving as Houston’s primary international gateway and one of the nation’s busiest airports with extensive cargo and energy-industry traffic. The airport’s large footprint links nonstop service across the Americas, Europe and Asia and functions as a major hub for United Airlines while hosting numerous low-cost and international carriers, which helps keep airfares competitive. Located about 23 miles north of downtown Houston, it’s reachable via I‑45, the Sam Houston Tollway, shuttle buses, taxis, rideshares and airport bus connections, plus inter-terminal people movers; parking and concessions can be pricey, but flight options are generally affordable.
